Reporting a problem

The most useful report names the manual, the page, and what you expected. "The link for code 1501 in 0J1195 opened at the top of page 120 instead of the test" is something that can be fixed the same day. "The links are broken" is not.

Extraction problems are specific to the manual they happen in, so the manual's part number and revision matter more than anything else.

Common questions

How do I add a manual?

Open the app, tap Import PDFs, and pick the file from Files or iCloud. The manual is read once on import — a few hundred pages takes under a minute — and after that everything works offline.

Does Faultsmith come with manuals?

No, and it never will. Manufacturers' manuals are their copyrighted material. Faultsmith is a reader for the PDFs you already have.

My manual imported but found no fault codes.

Some manuals genuinely have no fault table — parts manuals and technical bulletins usually don't. If yours does have one and Faultsmith missed it, that's a bug worth reporting: send the part number and the page the table is on.

A code's link went to the wrong place.

Report it with the code, the manual and the page it landed on. Cross-references are resolved by reading the manual's own text, so a new table format can defeat it — and each one that gets reported gets handled.

Will my notes and markup survive an update?

Yes. Notes, markup, pinned pages and your own glossary entries are stored per manual on the device and are not touched by app updates.

Is there an Android version?

Faultsmith runs on Android and is developed against it, but the released beta is iPad and iPhone first. Ask if you need Android.

Something that would genuinely help

Faultsmith has been built and tested against Generac manuals. The way it finds sections, tables and cross-references is written to work on any manufacturer's manual, but that is a claim, not yet a proven fact.

If you have a service manual from another manufacturer — Kohler, Cummins, Briggs, anything — and you're willing to test with it, that is the single most useful thing you could send.
